“Zeugma”, meaning bridge head, is an ancient city located in Belkıs village of Nizip district of Gaziantep. The ancient city is world-famous for its mosaics from the Roman period. The “Gypsy Girl” mosaic was removed from Zeugma and became the symbol of the ancient city. The person in the mosaic is thought to be the Greek goddess “Gaia”. However, the mosaic is called “Gypsy Girl” among the people because of her hair braids. Original mosaic is currently exhibited in Gaziantep Museum.
The work was made by Onomay Art sticking to the shapes of all the parts of the original mosaic, by cutting them one by one with scale differences and pasting them one by one.
Approximately 50 different marbled paper is used and consists of approximately 1500 pieces.
All joints are covered with 22 carat mat gold. The most important feature of the work is that the eyes of the “Gypsy Girl” follow you from wherever you look and you always come to eye.
